How to Childproof Your Electrical Outlets

Electricity is perhaps one of the most fundamental parts of our daily lives, so much so that many of us take it for granted. However, electricity presents a number of safety and fire hazards, which is why proper safety measures are so important. When you throw kids into the equation, things can get really messy. Here’s one thing you can do to make electricity more safe for your kids: child-proof your electrical outlets.

Why It’s Important to Childproof Electrical Outlets

We all understand that children are naturally curious. Even as they grow older this innate curiosity never truly goes away. That’s why it’s incredibly important to teach electrical safety to children of all ages. An incident with an outlet may not have a mild outcome, and when it comes to your children’s safety you can’t afford to leave anything at risk.

Use Tamper Resistant Outlets

Tamper resistant outlets provide an additional layer of defense against unwanted use by children. TR outlets are easy to install, but need to be done properly to ensure that they remain safe. Keep in mind however, that they are tamper resistant, not tamper-proof. You should rely on additional defenses as well to ensure your child’s safety.

Outlet Covers

Outlet covers serve as a deterrent to children who have no business toying with them. Even those little plastic plug covers can help, but a better solution is to look into shutter-style covers that install directly over the outlet. Shutter style covers are permanent and much more effective at keeping your little one’s safe from harmful electrical incidents.

Cords and Power Strips

If your eyes aren’t permanently glued to your child, chances are they’ve pulled a power cord out once or twice. The easiest way to prevent this is to hide outlets behind furniture or other objects. Power strips, which sit on the ground, are also a red flag for children. If you can’t successfully keep your power strip out of sight, consider investing in a power strip cover or box.
